The Cloisters, St Columba's Abbey, Iona

... forming a square, within the main Abbey on Iona, this cloister instils a profound sense of timeless tranquility.

Carved from a most tactile and beautiful sandstone, these columns have felt the touch of many thousands of pilgrims to this place.

The former Labour party leader, John Smith (a Scotsman who, regardless of one's politics, is widely regarded as having been an admirable and able politician) is buried under a slab of basalt, near to the Abbey.

Leica MP 35mm film camera, 50 mm Summilux (f 1.4) lens on Ilford FP4 125 iso. Scanned and processed through Nik Software Silver Efex Pro 2.   I retained the rather high contrast of this image in order to accentuate the symmetry of this cloister and to illustrate the film quality versus digital.
