Heavy Moss on Beech Trees, Lochbuie Beech Woods, Isle of Mull

...unlike very many of the Hebridean islands, in particular Skye, Mull is quite heavily wooded in many parts, both with conifer plantations and with native trees.   Lochbuie, on the south of Mull, has very many gnarled and stunted oak trees and, interestingly, some very fine, mature beech trees in the wider vicinity of Lochbuie House.   I visited this area in July 2012, after a very heavy Atlantic storm and I was dismayed to see that all of the beech leaves had withered and died - due, I discovered, to the heavy salt spray in the atmosphere.

The following year there was no sign of that damage - the beech trees were fine and healthy and seemed to have completely recovered from their experience.

The green "cast" in the images is genuine - these woods are incredibly fresh and green, with sunlight filtering down through the leaves to imbue a rich green hue to everything beneath the canopy
